Beggar and a Diamond / Meenakshisundaram Kolandaivel

One night, a beggar stumbled on a diamond!
As big as a peanut; Glowing in the moonlight.
Beggar was lonely; he looked around,
Wonder stuck, picked up the diamond,
Rushed to the hilltop, and in the moonlight from the sky,
Gazed at the diamond’s lustre and heaved a shy!

But, he could never wear it, for the fear of theft;
He did not wish to dispose it; as it was the only precious thing left!
He cherished the newfound gift in his possession,
Alone he spent his time with his obsession;
Little sleep he could muster, keeping vigil on his new gift;
He enjoyed it’s company as that of a friend, the dearest;
With all his heart, he loved it; in solitude he celebrated his love;
In silence he suffered his misfortune,
For he could never show off his new found love!
Words, he spoke a few at best, for the fear of any disclosure in zest;
His eyes glanced away from the weary world,
Which never knew of the lustrous diamond he held;
For him it was not just a precious stone,
A God’s gift, a love and his fortune!

One day, he was taken ill;
Slowly, the illness embraced him like winter chill;
He spent his little energy singing lullabies,
Telling strange fairy stories to his only buddy.
Then the final day came; he did not wish after his demise
Someone stole the diamond from his purse.
He reflected, and
Swallowed the diamond and died.

The civic body buried his body; and
the diamond with him;
None moaned; none knew that there was a diamond
Buried with him; the coolie who buried the body could trace,
A strange smile on the beggar’s face;
And exclaimed,” poor fellow, he got what he wished for, perhaps!”

Little did I know when I heard this story,
That my love would turn out to be,
Like the beggar’s diamond,
Untold, unseen and carried in my bosom till my grave!
