Yesterday I watched hope disappear
as my fellow countrymen went to the polls, and
chose not to choose. Which is not to say that
not choosing be not a choice. There though be something not
just cynical in choosing the status quo when it continues
hurting so many, but when chosen by those hurting both
masochistic
and a
surrender to hopelessness.
But then again, perhaps
the only thing that surprises me is that
we are still surprised (Yang Lian). Throwing open
the shutters this morning, the closing line from Lian’s 1989
slaps me like the sun: today is a perfectly ordinary day.
