The Lion

A Buddhist monk in Angkor Wat.

The iconographic representation of the lion in Buddhism usually is an invocation of the Buddha. Shakyamuni Buddha was a member of the Shakya (lion) clan. The lion also symbolizes royalty and may also represent the Mauryan Buddhist king Asoka, famous for erecting stupas and columns to popularize the faith.
